Things to Know about the Aftercare of Wisdom Tooth Extraction

wisdom tooth aftercare extraction

Wisdom tooth removal is a procedure dreaded by many patients, but in most cases, the extraction of the wisdom tooth is not more complicated or more painful than the extraction of other teeth and even complicated extractions can heal quickly with proper aftercare. Here are some Skokie wisdom tooth extraction tips about what to do and what not to do after you have had a wisdom tooth out:

-          Take the day off – wisdom tooth removal is a type of surgery and like any surgery, it exhausts the body. After the surgery, you will need to rest, so take the day off and relax in a comfortable environment;

-          Have painkillers at hand – when the effect of the anesthetic wears off, you might feel pain or discomfort in the surgical area. Ibuprofen is usually the best painkiller to take, so make sure to have some tablets in your medicine closet;

-          Avoid strenuous exercise and saunas for a couple of days – elevated temperatures and physical effort can slow down the initial healing process;

-          Do not brush your teeth on the day of the surgery – you can clean the other teeth gently, but avoid the extraction site;

-          Eat only soft food for a couple of days – hard food particles might hurt your healing gum, so avoid hard and chewy foods for a few days;

-          Avoid dairy – anything made from milk should be avoided for three or four days;

-          Do not smoke or drink alcohol for at least 24 hours – tobacco smoke and alcohol can cause irritation and inflammations, so they should be avoided.
