How Will Illinois Oral Surgeons Put Your Mind at Ease

chicago dental surgeon patient mind at ease

For some patients, a visit to the dentist's office causes a strong sense of anxiety. It is difficult for these patients to start a dental treatment, even if they are told that the entire procedure will be completely pain free.

Nowadays, many Illinois oral surgeons offer methods of sedation or relaxation that help patients overcome their fear, so that the Chicago dental implant surgeon treatments can be performed in the best possible conditions.

Intravenous sedation

I.V. sedation involves an injection of a sedative, usually into a vein in the patient`s hand. The effect of the drug occurs quickly. After the procedure, the patient will be monitored for about an hour. Even if the possibility of side effects and complications is insignificant, it is good to inform your doctor about any conditions or treatments you are following.

Inhalation (sedation with "laughing gas")

Inhalation consists of the administration of a gas (nitrous oxide and oxygen), right before the procedure begins. The patient is invited to inhale this mixture, which will take effect quickly, causing a pleasant feeling of relaxation. The patient will remain conscious, even if they might feel a slight state of drowsiness.

Sedation by pills

Oral sedatives (e.g., Xanax, Valium) have the effect of relaxing the patient, if administered one hour before the performance of the oral procedure. However, the clinical effect and degree of relaxation these pills provide is often variable, thus quite unpredictable.
