Wisdom teeth are the third molars in the human mouth, teeth that have lost their role in chewing and eating and the teeth that are the most likely to cause problems. While most dental specialists agree that wisdom teeth that are healthy, fully and correctly erupted and positioned in a way that allows for thorough cleaning do not need to be extracted, wisdom teeth rarely develop correctly and they are so prone to decay that for most people, their wisdom teeth are the first that need to be extracted. Here are some common wisdom tooth problems that can only be corrected through removal:
- Incorrect growth – in many cases, wisdom teeth fail to grow in completely or they grow underneath the gum surface, without erupting at all. Teeth that get partially or completely trapped inside the gum can develop severe infection and they can also compromise the position and the health of the other teeth in the row, so they need to be extracted;
- Decay and infections – wisdom teeth are difficult to reach for cleaning, therefore they are more likely to develop cavities, infections and cysts. The issue is usually handled through the Park Ridge wisdom tooth extraction procedure.
