What is Uvulo-Palato-Pharyngo-Plasty Surgery

oral surgery needed

Uvulo-Palato-Pharyngo-Plasty is a surgical technique commonly used to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. The technique is represented by the surgical excision of the excessive mucosa of the palatine veil (soft palate) and theuvula, causing a reduction in their laxity and an increase in respiratory space. It can also be associated with tonsillectomy, when the tonsils are large and cause an additional narrowing of this space.

Determining the surgical indication is complex and takes into account several factors. The standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is conservative, being the treatment with CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), with good results, in general. However, there are situations in which this treatment cannot be used, it is refused by patients or is simply not enough to improve sleep. In these cases, there are a number of surgical methods that can be applied.

Starting from the classical UPPP, a series of other procedures have been developed that have the same purpose, to stiffen and shorten the palatal veil, but also to increase the size of the oropharyngeal isthmus: UPPP with LASER, with radio frequency, velar stiffening procedures with different types of implant, radio frequency etc. Used as the only method of treatment, surgical techniques on the palatal veil have good short-term effects and are indicated for mild-moderate OSA and regular snoring. The results are much better when combined with other surgical techniques, on the nose or the base of the tongue, see https://www.oralsurgery-hicd.com/contact-us/buffalo-grove-office/.
