Possible Complications of Wisdom Teeth Extraction

The risk of complications associated with the removal of the wisdom teeth is less than 0.5%, when the operation is performed by an experienced Park Ridge wisdom tooth removal oral surgeon, who uses modern surgical techniques, equipment and instruments.

Medical and surgical complications are prevented by:

     - thorough investigations (including dental tomography)

     - careful, digitally assisted planning

     - the use of modern equipment

     - the use of meticulous and minimally invasive surgical techniques

Potential complications during the intervention (unlikely but statistically possible) include:

Nerve damage:

The lower molars are close to a sensory nerve that runs through the lower jaw, called the lower alveolar nerve. Sometimes, nerve irritation may occur during extraction, but it usually disappears in 6-8 weeks.

Another possible complication is damage to the lingual nerve (the nerve that transmits sensations to the tongue). This can be avoided by marking the incisions carefully and by using appropriate surgical techniques.

Sinus problems:

The upper molars are located in the immediate vicinity of the sinus cavities. Once a tooth is extracted, there is a possibility of a small cavity forming between the sinus and the extraction site. In this case, a special procedure must be done to suture the cavity.

Broken roots:

The roots of the wisdom teeth may occasionally break, during extraction. It is important to remove all roots during the surgery, to prevent infection.
