Oral surgery, even if it is a small incision or an unproblematic extraction, can entail risks and complications are also possible. If you are concerned and you want to avoid any post-operative problems, here are some tips for you about what to do and what to do after the intervention:
- Take things easy for a while – it is a good idea to take the day of the surgery off work or, even better, to schedule the surgery for a Friday, to have the entire weekend for recovery;
- Do not do anything that requires you to stoop or to lift anything – the activities that require you to stoop, to lift or to perform any physically demanding activities can negatively affect the surgical area and it can dislodge the blood clot that forms in the gap to protect the wound and to promote the healing;
- Stay away from foods and drinks that are too hot or too cold for a couple of days – temperature extremes can cause pain and it can also affect the blood clot negatively;
- Go back to the doctor if you feel any pain days after the surgery – the signs of infection usually come three or four days after the surgery, not before that. If everything seems fine in the beginning, but on day 3 or 4 you suddenly feel pain and a foul taste in your mouth, contact your doctor at Hochstadter, Isaacson, Cherny, Dumanis & Associates Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Ltd., right away.
